“The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood” Review
Written by the La Junta High School Journalism Class
Huzzah Huzzah! Come one, come all for a wacky, hilarious romp through Sherwood Forest with the young actors of La Junta Junior Jr/Sr High School Tiger Theatre! Members of the La Junta High School Journalism class--Wyatt Thomas, Isaiah Peralta, Bailey Ward, Keeley Gutierrez, and Nevaeh Adams--had the opportunity to experience this exciting production at the La Junta Junior/Senior High School Theatre on Wednesday, November 6.
“The Somewhat True Tale” brings us Robin, with the help of a Merry Man wannabe simply known as the Town's Girl, to turn this once-simple legend into a hysterical trip through Sherwood Forest with surprises at every turn. Our charming-but-egotistical hero leads his band of familiar wood-dwellers as they battle the delectably evil Prince John and his haughty henchman, the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin's one and only love, the Lady Marian, remains true to her champion as she assists his crusade by wishing the prince and sheriff a rash of various skin afflictions. Incredibly, our model good guy Robin discovers that even heroes have a few important life lessons to learn.
Several actors were real standouts during the show, including Noah Nunez-Rebel, who gave an over-the-top, larger than life performance as the title hero. He was truly entertaining to watch, and his turns at managing the Merry Men, bickering with the Town’s Girl, and even spending time in the Dungeon of Demise (Demise…Demise…) were full of comedic moments. Maranatha Hoyt, as The Town’s Girl, gave a scrappy, engaging performance, utilizing her relationship with the offstage “Technical Director” to help move the plot along through flashbacks and segues, ultimately helping Robin to defeat the bad guys and win his true love (spoiler alert!) Another standout performance was given by the hilarious seventh-grader Kenzie Grasmick as Prince John. Her sassy dramatic poses and actions and sense of comedic timing made her truly captivating--it will be fun to watch her as she progresses in Tiger Theatre. Junior Emily Malec gave an “award-winning” performance as Lady Marian. Ms. Malec has grown a great deal as an actress during her years with Tiger Theatre--she brought great confidence and commitment to this role. And we can’t forget Gianna Ayala, as the Lady Marian’s Lady-in-Waiting…her screams while running across the stage are truly epic. Izzy Ortiz gave a strong performance as the evil Sheriff Nottingham with her threatening stance and powerful glare. Finally, what version of Robin Hood would be complete without Friar Tuck (Kaylynn Martinez) and the band of Merry Men (Montana Brereton, Ayralynn Garrett, Lillian Seaba, Maria Lavin, Aubriella Pineda, and Mikayla Martinez)
This group of young actors played their parts with wild abandon--it was clear that they were having a lot of fun on stage, and we had fun right along with them!
This fast-paced, hilarious script is truly brought to life by these talented actors--be careful not to get to laughing TOO hard, or you’ll miss some of the tremendously funny, well-timed “Easter eggs” throughout. Look for nods to “Men in Tights,” the Publisher’s Clearing House, and Girl Scout cookies, just to name a few. Also, be prepared to be “tortured,” along with Robin, by a certain ‘90s tune.
As mentioned by The Town’s Girl, the actual “technical director” is truly a star of this show as well. The selections of music, lighting, and crazy sound effects truly round this show out.
Kudos to directors Desiree Goheen, Tracey Salzbrenner, and Molly Borton for inspiring and encouraging this young group to the confidence we see on stage. We are sure to see much more from this talented group of performers in the future.
