Severe Weather Leads to Multiple Crashes Throughout the State
(COLO) Southeastern Colorado experienced a storm causing hazardous conditions on interstates and highways. Snow quickly covered the roads resulting in stranded motorists, property damage crashes, and ultimately a fatal crash.
This morning, troopers responded to multiple reports of vehicles stuck on I-70 in Elbert County CO. These stranded motorists led to the road being shut down. The interstate was closed eastbound at milepost 358 while the stuck motorists were helped back onto the road and the road was treated by CDOT. At this time one lane eastbound remains closed.
Troopers in the El Paso County area, responded to a non-injury crash on I-25 near mile post 121. During the investigation, a marked Colorado State Patrol vehicle was struck by another motorist. The Trooper and the motorist did not suffer any injuries during the crash. There are no road closures as a result of this crash.
In Fremont County, troopers have responded to multiple crashes on Highway 115 near Penrose CO. One of those crashes resulted in a death. The fatal crash came in at about 7:19 a.m. on Highway 115 near milepost 18. Initial reports indicate this was a two-vehicle head on crash, where one driver was pronounced dead on scene. The crash had caused the highway to be shut down at that location. Highway 115 has since been reopened.
This crash is actively under investigation at this time. The deceased party will be identified by the Fremont County Coroner following proper notifications.
