In Loving Memory of Eugene Chavez.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eugene Benjamin Chavez, who left us peacefully surrounded by his loving family on February 3, 2025, at the age of 89. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and a cherished member of our community.
Eugene was born on September 7, 1935, in Denver, Colorado to Florencia Chavez and Eugene Miera. Growing up in Monte Villa in East Los Angles. Eugene exhibited a passion for boxing. He became a golden Glove Boxer and won a couple of titles. He loved boxing and had the honor of sparing with Sonny Liston.
Eugene was a sheep herder in his younger years in Wyoming and lived in Pine Dale, Wyoming and later lived in Denver, Colorado working for the City of Denver and Denver County until he retired. After his retirement Eugene and Priscilla moved to La Junta, Colorado, which ended being his final home.
Eugene met and married wife Priscilla Ojeda August 31, 1960, and together they have been married for 65 years. Together they built a life filled with love and joy. He was a devoted patriarch in the family! He is survived by his wife Priscilla Chavez, of La Junta, Colorado, children Sally Chavez of Rocky Ford, Robert Chavez of La Junta, Colorado, Dolores (Lola) Chavez of La Junta, Colorado, and Rita Chavez of La Junta, Colorado, 19 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, brothers, Tommy (Margo) Sandoval of Denver, Colorado, Raymond (Flora) Sandoval of Florida, sisters, Alice Abeyta of Denver, Barbara (Nasario) Arellano of Denver, and Mary Lou (Manuel) Bustillos of Denver.
He is preceded in death by his son, Ruben Chavez, Parents Florencia Chavez and Eugene Miera, Grandmother Rosie Salazar, grandson Dakota Chavez, great-granddaughter Azyza Chavez, brothers Floyd Sandoval, Nick Sandoval, George Ortega, John Miera, and Ernie Ortega, sisters, Stella Werick, Willhelma Martinez, Virginia Martinez and Roberta Gonzalez.
Eugene had a passion for his football, but his passion was boxing and baseball. The Colorado Rockies was his favorite team. He also loved telling his stories from back in the day. He loved to have a cold one from time to time. He enjoyed his Spanish music and participated in the Ceaser Chavez marches and crusades at La Raza Park. Friends and family will always remember his enthusiasm and zest for life.
Eugene leaves behind a legacy of love and a wonderful family who will always hold his memory in their hearts. He touched the lives of many through his examples of love, generosity, wisdom, and kindness. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him and loved him.
A Celebration to honor Eugene's life will be held on February 11, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Upper Room Fellowship Church in La Junta, Colorado. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Eugene are welcome to attend and celebrate his remarkable life. Johnson-Romero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
