Obituary

Steven Doyle “Steve” Graham passed away just before 5pm on March 18, 2025, surrounded by family and friends, at UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. He was 71.

Born in La Junta, CO on November 3, 1953, and raised in Swink, CO as a member of the notorious “Grahams," Steve was the fourth of Duane and Edith’s nine kids. As a young boy, he adored the game of baseball, and carried a love of all things sports with him throughout his life.

After graduating from Swink High School in 1972, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attaining a rank of E-4. He worked as a Naval Mechanic or “Torpedo Man”, on the USS Dixie, based in San Diego, CA. From here, he saw the world on water, spending time in Japan, the Philippines, and the islands of Hawaii.

While in the Military, Steve would meet and marry his wife of 49 years, Linda.

After receiving his honorable discharge, Steve and Linda moved to Fort Collins, CO, where Steve graduated from Colorado State University, earning his Bachelor of Education, with a focus on teaching the Industrial Arts.

Steve and Linda settled in Ft. Collins, buying a home to raise their kids, Aaron and Sarah. Here, Steve began his career as a dedicated civil servant, supporting his family while working for the United States Postal Service, from which he retired in 2017, after 31 years.

A Colorado boy through and through, Steve loved the outdoors. He felt at home in the Rocky Mountains, in all seasons. During the spring and summer he was an avid hiker and rope climber, summiting 49 of Colorado’s  legendary 14ers. In the winter, he found his profound happiness snowboarding alongside his friends, family, and especially his children. Also an ardent cyclist, Steve became committed to a cause, riding in Colorado’s Courage Classic, an annual 150-mile bike ride, which raises money for the Children’s Hospital of Colorado. He rode in the event 11 times, the last of which he accomplished after rehabilitation from a heart attack he’d suffered the year prior. He continued on as a volunteer in the event for years after.

Throughout his life, he was a connoisseur of music. His knowledge was encyclopedic, as he’d eagerly catalogue everything he could get his hands on. From the psychedelic rock of his teenage years to the eclectic jazz of his latter, Steve was both apprentice to, and often teacher of, the musicians he’d discovered along the way.

He’ll be forever remembered as a wonderful father, brother, uncle, friend, better friend, best friend, and most recently grandpa. He is preceded in death by his parents Duane and Edith, and his older brothers J.D and Deemus.

He is survived by his loving wife Linda, his children Aaron (Allysia McClure) and Sarah (Derek Clark), and his cherished granddaughter Maple Lane Clark.

A celebration of life service for Steve will take place at the Ft. Collins United Methodist Church on Friday, May 9th at 11am. Reception to follow.
