Obituary

Scott Briggs, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025. He was born on July 28, 1950, in Lamar, Colorado, to Don and Emma Briggs. Scott grew up in Haswell, where his father farmed for Garvey Grain and managed the local grain elevator. Those early years on the plains shaped Scott’s lifelong love of the land and the people who worked it.

Scott attended grade school in Haswell and graduated from Eads High School in 1968. After graduating, he continued farming alongside his father, carrying forward the Briggs family’s dedication to agriculture.

In January 1970, Scott enlisted in the Colorado Army National Guard. He completed eight weeks of basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and proudly served six years as an assembler in the 2nd Battalion, 157th Field Artillery. During his service, he qualified as an expert with the U.S. rifle, earning a Rifle Expert Badge and an ARCAM medal. Scott received an honorable discharge in January 1976—a point of personal pride and a testament to his character and commitment.

Scott met the love of his life, Trudy, during their high school years, and the two were married on May 9, 1971. They built a beautiful life together, blessed with two sons—Brandon Briggs and Jason Briggs. Scott continued farming and ranching before eventually shifting into custom crop spraying. His dedication and entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found Precision Pest Control, a business that became well respected across the region.

To many who knew him, Scott was nothing short of a legendary goose hunter. Alongside his close-knit circle of hunting partners—affectionately known as “The Fraternity”—Scott spent countless mornings in the goose pit, where he was truly in his element. His extraordinary ability to call geese with only his voice became widely recognized. Bill Logan, former outdoor editor for the Rocky Mountain News, once wrote:
 “Since he was a small boy, Scotty has been able to call geese with his voice. It is remarkable to hear this. The effect on the geese is as if the leader of all the great flocks is on the ground amid the decoys talking the waves of flying geese into the notion that all is well and there is excellent grain to be had at this spot for dinner.”

For Scott, those days spent hunting with his friends were among his most cherished memories.

Scott also had a deep love for sports—especially baseball. He coached Babe Ruth summer baseball with his great friend Marty Miller, and later shared his knowledge and passion by helping coach the Eads High School baseball team for two seasons. His dedication to supporting young athletes left a lasting impact on many in the community.

Scott accepted Christ as his personal Savior at the age of 32, a decision that shaped the rest of his life and guided the way he loved and led his family.

Scott is survived by his loving wife, Trudy Briggs; his sons, Brandon Briggs and Jason (Lori) Briggs; and his grandchildren, Megan Briggs, Ashleigh Briggs, Ally Briggs, and Abby (Marty) Moran. He is also survived by his sister, Valorie Briggs, along with numerous extended family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Above all, Scott will be remembered for his loyalty, his humor, his easy smile, and his unwavering love for his family. He lived his life with integrity, generosity, and a steadfast devotion to those he cared about.

He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered.
