This November, Otero College welcomes Kyle Spencer back to campus as he proudly takes on the responsibilities of the Athletic Director. No stranger to Otero College, Spencer is eager to usher in a new era that combines his deep adoration for the Otero community with his multifaceted career experience.
In 2012, Spencer began his professional career here, at Otero College, where he had the opportunity to earn his Master’s Degree in Sports Management with an emphasis in Athletic Administration while simultaneously leading the women’s basketball team. Three years later, Spencer transitioned to teaching and coaching at the high school level to allow himself more time to focus on raising a family with his wife.
In 2020, Spencer joined Yellowstone Christian College as their athletic director and oversaw their sports management program, which included the management of all aspects of the athletic department, further solidifying his dynamic approach to the role. This was quickly substantiated by his promotion to the Vice President of Student Services, where Spencer retained the responsibilities of not only the Athletic Director, but the head men’s basketball coach as well.
Now excited to bring both his family and his expertise back to where it all began, La Junta, Colorado, Spencer reflects on what led him back to Otero College for this exciting next chapter of his career. “The three years I spent here were quite formative,” says Spencer. “Coming back felt like coming home.”
When asked about foreseeable challenges, Spencer does not shy away. “As a community college, we have to be aware of retention and financial issues and take them on. The culture here at Otero is to take what is already here and elevate.” It is Spencer’s philosophy that when people are given what they need to improve individually, they will be able to foster a positive experience for themselves, coworkers, and most importantly, our students.
By prioritizing community relationships, expanding corporate partnerships, and connecting with alumni, Spencer anticipates Otero’s athletic department becoming the premier athletic department with all sports competing for region nine titles.
