High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Rollover Crash; Driver Ejected

On February 15, 2026, at approximately 12:03 a.m., the Otero County Sheriff’s Office assisted the La Junta Police Department with a vehicle pursuit that began following a traffic stop near Highway 50 and Dalton Avenue in La Junta.

The driver, identified as Ikxander Richard Figueroa Maldonado, fled in a gray BMW, leading officers on a pursuit along Highway 50 through Swink, Manzanola, and Fowler.

During the pursuit, the vehicle exceeded 100 mph, drove into oncoming traffic, and continued westbound despite multiple tires being disabled by spike strips.

Otero County deputies assumed the lead pursuit after assisting agencies disengaged.

The Colorado State Patrol later joined and conducted a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) near Milepost 318 in Pueblo County. The vehicle rolled, and Maldonado was ejected.

He was taken into custody and transported by EMS with serious injuries and remains in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation revealed Maldonado had multiple active felony warrants and was driving under suspension.A firearm was recovered from the vehicle.

The La Junta Police Department will be filing formal charges.Assisting agencies included the La Junta Police Department, Rocky Ford Police Department, Otero County Sheriff’s Office, Fowler Police Department, and Colorado State Patrol.

No officers or members of the public were injured.

The investigation remains ongoing.
