Colorado State Patrol Names the Trooper of the Year
(Colorado, Golden) – Each year, the Colorado State Patrol selects a trooper who best demonstrates outstanding work performance, initiative, leadership, character, and integrity and whose actions or performance significantly exceed expectations if they exemplify the Colorado State Patrol’s core values of Honor, Duty, and Respect.
Throughout 2025, Trooper Dennis Guffey consistently demonstrated outstanding work performance, initiative, and leadership. His nomination highlighted his service and leadership in support of this honor. He is based out of the Fruita Troop Office in Mesa County.

Trooper Guffey had an incredible 2025. While serving as a Sergeant First Class in the Army Reserves, he also completed his doctoral degree in Criminal Justice. Yet he continued to dedicate time to helping other law enforcement professionals grow by teaching at the Colorado Mesa University Tech Police Academy, both semesters, for their Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Class, and at the Colorado State Patrol Academy for the Evidential Breath Alcohol Testing (EBAT) class.
Trooper Guffey did all this work while serving on the CSP Statewide DUI Team for a portion of the year. His efforts alone resulted in proactively removing 82 impaired drivers from the roadways and arresting another 14 impaired drivers from crashes for a total of 96 impaired driving arrests. This was the highest number of impaired driving arrests made by an individual Trooper for the Colorado State Patrol in 2025.
With all his professional accomplishments, Trooper Guffey also made the time to connect with the community he serves each day. He participated in two ‘shop with a cop’ events over the holiday season and participated in the Tip a Cop event to benefit Colorado Special Olympics. His location collected the most donations in Colorado.
Trooper Guffey is a dedicated member of the Fruita Troop and is vital to the ongoing efforts to increase traffic safety in Mesa and Garfield. His contributions have a significant positive impact on the Colorado State Patrol and the State of Colorado.
