Colorado Springs and Pueblo will see upgrades to traffic signals at multiple intersections
New backplates will improve signal visibility
El Paso & Pueblo Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, Morton Electric, will begin work the first week of May to enhance driver safety with traffic signal backplates at multiple locations across Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Highways impacted include:
- Interstate 25 (Ramps and feeder roadways on Eagleridge Boulevard)
- US Highway 50A
- US 50B
- US 85
- Colorado Highway 16
- CO 21
- CO 45
- CO 96
Traffic signal backplates improve visibility by providing higher contrast around the signal heads making the lights standout more clearly. They also reduce sun glare and increase signal recognition from a distance, providing motorists with greater reaction times.
The project is expected to move quickly and starts in Pueblo on CO 45. The crew anticipates completing four signals per week. Project completion is expected in mid-August.
Traffic Impacts
Traffic impacts will include:
- Each intersection has specific work hours based on traffic demands but general hours of operation will be from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Motorists can expect limited impacts with shoulder and alternating single lane closures.
