Sharpe Fire Explodes to More Than 10,000 Acres; Mandatory Evacuations Ordered for Campo Area
CAMPO, Colo. — The Sharpe Fire in Southeastern Colorado has rapidly exploded in size Sunday afternoon, growing from approximately 3,500 acres to 10,073 acres in about six hours, prompting mandatory evacuations and urgent warnings from emergency officials.
Springfield Fire Department reports mandatory evacuations are now in effect for the Town of Campo and areas from Road 24 to Highway 287, south of Road J to the Colorado state line.
“This is an active threat to life and property. Evacuate north now. Do not wait,” officials warned.
The wildfire is reportedly moving north and northwest, placing communities directly in its path. Residents are urged to leave immediately, check on neighbors, and avoid delaying evacuation efforts.
Authorities emphasized that 911 should only be used for life-threatening emergencies.
The fire is burning in extreme southeastern Colorado near the Kansas and Oklahoma borders, where dry conditions and wind have contributed to explosive fire growth.
The Baca County Sheriff’s Office says donations of water and Gatorade are currently being accepted at Springfield Schools to support emergency crews and evacuees. Officials clarified that food donations are not being accepted at this time.
Meanwhile, Campo School District announced that graduation ceremonies have been postponed due to the ongoing wildfire emergency.
“Due to the fires that are threatening Campo and the need for all of our resources to be available for this fire, we are postponing graduation,” the district stated.
The district also asked the community to keep firefighters in their thoughts and prayers.
“Please pray for our firefighters that have been trying to keep us safe for many hours now.”
