Operation I-25 State-to-State

Colorado State Patrol kicks off "100 Deadliest Days of Summer"

(Colorado) – The Colorado State Patrol will conduct a high-visibility traffic enforcement initiative focused on Colorado's primary north-south corridor, I-25, during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. From the Wyoming border to the New Mexico border, expect to see troopers coordinating with local law enforcement partners to ensure comprehensive coverage across jurisdictional lines.

The priorities of this multi-day operation for the Colorado State Patrol focus on three pillars of public safety.

  • Aggressive driving mitigation

  • Impaired driving enforcement

  • Roadside Safety for anyone on the side of the road with emergency lights activated

This multi-agency operation will take place beginning Friday, May 22, and continue through Monday, May 25, on Interstate 25.

Troopers will be on the lookout for drivers engaging in aggressive driving, including excessive speeding, unsafe lane changes, tailgating, and improper passing. In addition, if a driver shows any signs of impairment, they should not expect a warning. There is no excuse to drive under the influence of any impairing substance.

If you encounter a driver that you suspect is intoxicated, avoid that vehicle and, when safe, pull over and contact the Colorado State Patrol by calling *CSP (*277) or 9-1-1. Be prepared to provide a vehicle description, license plate number, and location and direction of travel.

Finally, in 2024, the Colorado Slow Down Move Over law expanded to provide greater protection for all people and their vehicles on the side of the road. The enhanced law requires you to move over for all motorists, including emergency responders, tow trucks, maintenance vehicles, and passenger vehicles with hazard lights activated. Colorado drivers have two choices when they see an emergency/tow/ maintenance vehicle or passenger vehicle with emergency hazards on:

  • Move over at least one lane from that vehicle.

  • If they cannot safely move over, then they must slow down to a safe speed.

    • Safe speed means Drivers must slow down to 25 MPH or less in a 40 MPH zone.

    • Drivers must slow by at least 20 MPH in a 45MPH or higher zone.

Failure to yield to a stationary vehicle is a class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense and is punishable by 10-90 days in jail and/or $150 to $300 in fines, and 3 points assessed on their Colorado DL.
