Obituary
Gloria Anna Angela Ruybal, of Las Mesitas, Colorado, entered into rest on June 9, 2026, at the Rio Grande Inn Rehab Center and Nursing Facility in La Jara, Colorado. Born on November 9, 1938, in Punche Valley, Colorado, Gloria was the cherished daughter of Maria Bersabe and Jose Simon Lucero and lived to the age of 87.
She is survived by a loving family, including her children: Antonio Lionel (Cheryl Vondrak) Ruybal III of Denver, Julian Ruybal of Antonito, Jacqueline (John) DeHerrera of Aurora, Miguel (Maribel) Ruybal of Milliken, and Teotenantzin Ruybal of Antonito. Gloria’s legacy extends to her grandchildren—Brandy, Porscha, Larry, Annmarie, Christina, Amanda, Ashley (Lionel), Elena, Jose, Joshua, Mariah, Camrey, Rebekah and her great-grandchildren: Lionel Romeo, Abigail, Manuel, Maximus, Luca, Rudy, Walker, Briar Lynn. She is also survived by siblings Jose Amarante (Diane) Lucero of Antonito, Berlinda Martinez of Pueblo, Aida Vigil of Pueblo, and Helen Rael of Pueblo.
Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Lionel Ruybal; her children, Debra Fountain, Michael James Ruybal, and Rudolfo “Rudy” Ruybal; granddaughters Andrea Madrid and Elise Ruybal; her parents, Jose Simon Lucero and Maria Bersade Lucero; brothers Gilbert Lucero and Moises Lucero; and sisters Lucille Garcia and Wilma Jean Davis.
Gloria found her greatest joy in the simple beauty of farm life in the Punche Valley, where she spent her childhood. She later made her home in Antonito, and married her beloved Lionel at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos, Colorado. Together they began their married life in Denver before returning to the San Luis Valley to raise their family in Las Mesitas.
Gloria devoted many years to teaching, shaping the minds and lives of generations of students. She left a lasting impact on all who learned from her, in the classroom and beyond.
She found happiness in the things she loved most. Few things delighted her more than an unexpected bouquet of roses or lilacs. She cherished Spanish music, enjoyed fishing and hunting alongside her family, and was a loyal fan of the Las Vegas Raiders. She also loved the quiet moments spent watching hummingbirds and eagles. Renowned for her culinary talents, Gloria was happiest in the kitchen, cooking and baking for those she loved.
Her family was her greatest treasure. She especially cherished her time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Gloria will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and devotion, and for the countless lives she touched with her generosity of spirit. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her and loved her.
