Aspen Acres Fire Aerial Recon Shows Bishop Castle Survives, Firefighters Assess Hot Spots and Burn Scar

Description: An aerial reconnaissance flight over the Aspen Acres Fire on Sunday confirmed Bishop Castle and the communications site above Camp Jackson remain standing. Incident commanders used the flight to evaluate suppression efforts, identify remaining hot spots, and study how the wildfire behaved when it reached the 2016 Junkins Fire burn scar.

One of the Operations Section Chiefs with Alaska Complex Incident Management Team #1 took a reconnaissance flight over a portion of the Aspen Acres Fire on Sunday morning.

These flights are one way fire managers can monitor the success of suppression efforts. These flights also help them better understand the challenges they face as they plan future firefighting operations.

From the air you can see that Bishop’s Castle and an important communications site above Camp Jackson both remain standing.

You can also see some residual hot spots and observe how the fire reacted when it reached an area previously burned ten years ago by the Junkins Fire.
