Motorcycle Safety Training Reduces Your Risk of a Crash

(Colorado) - As motorcycle traffic continues to increase during Colorado's summer season, the Colorado State Patrol is reminding riders that proper training is one of the most effective ways to reduce crashes and improve rider safety.

As of July 7, 2026, Colorado State Patrol troopers have investigated 331 crashes involving a motorcycle. Of those crashes, 240 were determined to be the rider at-fault.

The leading contributing factors in these at-fault crashes were:

  •         Lane Violation (weaving): 60
  •         Inattentive (distracted): 41
  •         Speed: 41

Lane-violation crashes can be more than simply drifting. It could indicate rider inexperience, traveling too fast for the roadway, inattentive driving, and even impairment. These are factors that can often be addressed through rider education, practice, and sound riding habits.

Colorado's Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) program can provide a rider with the skills that are needed to safely operate a motorcycle. MOST offers beginner and intermediate courses for riders. The beginner rider course is designed for individuals with little or no riding experience and covers the basics of operating a motorcycle. The intermediate course is designed as an excellent refresher for infrequent riders or for those who have been riding for years and would like to get their motorcycle endorsement.
