La Junta Fire Department Reports Otero County Grass Fire Burns Approx. 100 Acres 

Monday morning, La Junta Fire Chief Brad Davidson reported that firefighters continue to fight a large grass fire that started on Sunday afternoon near US Hwy 50 milepost 387.

Chief Davidson said that the fire had started near US Hwy 50 and had jumped the river and was threatening Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site on Sunday. He said the fire had burned approximately 80-100 acres but was mostly contained on Monday morning as firefighters continued to extinguish some large trees. Davidson said all pre-evacuation orders have been lifted and there is no longer any threat to Bent’s Old Fort NHS.

Chief Davidson reported that there were no structures lost or injuries during the incident and that a full report will be released later.

LJFD Social Media Report:

Yesterday at approx 6pm we responded to Hwy 50 st MM387 for a reported fire in the barrow ditch. With strong winds at the time it spread the fire toward the river bottom.

Fire crews found a fast moving brush fire. Mutual aid was called in from Las Animas Fire, Rocky Ford, Hasty McClave, Cheraw, Manzanola, Ordway and OCSO Brush Truck, DFPC Eng 34 and BC 34 and Otero County Emergency Management. Traffic was controlled with CSP, CDOT, Bent County Sheriff and Otero County Sheriff.

Crews worked over night to make sure the fire didn’t spread any further and to protect Bents Old Fort.

The fire is approx. 100 acres but will be confirmed this afternoon.
