Obituary

Zorildia “Zipper” Lorraine Layton, 77, passed away peacefully in her home in Johnson, Kansas on Saturday, September 13, 2025.  She was born on July 20, 1948, in La Junta, Colorado to Paul and Bobbie Brinkley.  She attended Springfield High School and was a longtime resident of Baca County, but spent the last 35 years in Johnson, Kansas.  She had two children, Michelle and Michael.  On September 25, 1976, she married William “Bill” Eugene Layton, and they celebrated 48 years of marriage together.

Zipper was a talented and creative artist with a passion for life and a love for animals.  Her home was filled with fur, feathers and the quiet magic of a woman whose love extended to every living thing.  Whether she was rescuing a stray, spoiling a pet with treats and love, or talking to animas like they were old friends (because to her they were.)  It was in those small acts that her spirit shown the brightest.  Zipper was a proud Cherokee and treasured her heritage.  She handed down that wisdom and the Cherokee traditions to her children and grandchildren.  She had a gift for telling stories that will live on for generations.  She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister-in-law.  Zipper left this world with the same fiery spirit she carried every day of her life; strong, unfiltered and deeply loving.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Bobbie Brinkley; brother, Richard “Ricky” Brinkley and her son Michael Rodarmel.

Zipper leaves behind to treasure her memory her husband Bill, beloved daughter, Michelle, son-in-law Obed Irvin and sister-in-law Betty Willard.

Grandchildren:  Alicia (Jimmy) Kiefer, Brianna Gonzales, Kayla (CJ) Harpel, Kathleen Irvin, Harmony Provinzano, Kendra Rodarmel, Ashley (Kyle) Bousfield, Marie Rodarmel, Bailey (Josh) Meisenheimer and Jimmy Rodarmel.

Great Grandchildren:  Andrew and Angelo Kiefer, Evan Anderson, Olivia and Brendon Gonzales, Ray and Karley Bousfield, Cadence Seay and Amelia Rodarmel, Lily and Westley Meisenheimer, Taytin Beard, Daylin and Aubree Prist and Sylis Boyd.
